In many cases, the problems of surface definition is not defined properly, or not defined at all. The definition of surface quality is very strongly linked with the materials selection. With the introduction of many new, advanced and highly sophisticated materials, the product, tool and mould designers must have a system, which will enable them to determine the adequate surface conditions for selected products.
The proposed project is a very complex project, where different scientific fields are involved, from the materials, up to the technology, mechanical engineering and aesthetical demands. The surface integrity must be assured on all different levels, from the macro level, where the generic requirements are fulfilled, down to the micro- and nano- scale, where the final – crucial product properties are defined.
The aim of the project is to develop a unique decision system (Internet client based system) where the designers and technologist will be, dependent on the material, able to use different scientific and technical criteria for the selection of:
- appropriate surface definition,
- required machining technologies,
- surface coatings for the tools and products,
- surface coatings for cutting tools.
